Personality;

Hiccup is...not your typical viking. He's small in size and smaller in muscle, rather thin and gangly compared to other vikings his age like Snotlout and Fishlegs. Regarded with some scorn as 'Stoick's little embarrassment', Hiccup has only just come to find his place in the village of Berk as the resident dragon expert. Before this, everyone perceived him as an annoyance and keeping him inside during a dragon attack was number one priority aside from containment of the attacking dragons, given that he had a tendency to cause havoc wherever he went.

Being the son of the chief doesn't grant him any special privileges or reverence. Hiccup has had to work hard to get to where he is, considering that in a viking village everyone is expected to pull their own weight. Hiccup, though, is a viking and vikings have stubbornness issues. He can be just as stubborn as his father sometimes, possibly even more so considering he has had to fight in the past just to get people to listen to him. However, when he does have the chance to prove that he is just as viking as the rest of them, he backs down, overcome with the realization that he was looking at himself. Being weak and helpless is something he doesn't want to be, a reason why he struggles so hard to be the exact opposite.

What Hiccup lacks in strength, he makes up for with his brain. Something that is rather unusual in a muscle-bound society like Berk, he's easily one of the more intelligent people among his peers, bar Astrid and Fishlegs in their own right. He can come up with a plan in a split second, analyzing the situation at hand with a keen eye and hypothesizing the outcome, although like everyone else can underestimate himself. It's the naturally bred stubbornness, however, that allows him to realize when he makes a mistake and work to fix it. Sometimes Hiccup needs to hear someone tell him that what he's doing is right. He's not used to hearing praise and appreciation, and sometimes it takes a little bit of encouragement to help boost his confidence.

Much of Hiccup's struggle comes from trying to be the viking the rest of his tribe wants him to be. He's a bit of the 'black sheep' when it comes to the way the tribe treats him, like some kind of pimple they can't get rid of to make an otherwise smooth face. The tribe works together as one to provide for each other and fight for each other as a unit and Hiccup...lacks a lot of that. He's not strong like other vikings, nor is he as tall as he should be for his age (he's 5'4", even Astrid is taller than him). His own cousin even goes out of his way to exclude him from being a true part of the group even though Hiccup knows he's not (seen here). Dreamworks have mentioned that he's very much a modern day teenager stuck in viking times.

Hiccup has perseverance though. He pushes on in spite of people constantly telling him to stop trying so hard to be something he's not, doesn't give up. It's only when he starts being accepted after beginning to succeed in dragon training that he realizes he's bitten off more than he can chew. Astrid is angry with him, the whole tribe is enamored with him, and while it's something he's always wanted he doesn't necessarily do well in crowds. Although the link is Gift of the Night Fury, it says volumes about how uncomfortable being pressured makes Hiccup feel when he doesn't know how to answer. When he does know something though, he's incredibly smug about it, as seen in the TV show Riders of Berk. He has a tendency to belittle people sometimes, but he does have a kind heart and offers help when they need it.

Interacting with Toothless was a learning curve and very much the pivotal moment of Hiccup's life. Up until finding the downed dragon in the forest, he'd believed that he would someday be capable of killing a dragon and joining his tribe and making his father proud. Hoo boy was he wrong. Shooting Toothless down was one thing, actually killing him was another. Hiccup had never been that up close with a dragon before, aside from when they chased him around the village, so it's safe to say he'd never seen one of them as intelligent beings that thought and were able to decipher situations themselves.

Toothless gave him a chance nobody else had, and he took it, the drawing that the dragon had made in the ground of the cove a metaphor for him crossing the last line. Toothless became dependent on Hiccup to fly, and it became a mutual partnership - Hiccup provided him the ability, Toothless helped provide him an escape. Toothless didn't judge him, was someone he could confide in, and Hiccup found his calling. He was willing to run away to protect Toothless first, putting his life in front of his own. Their relationship developed as such to the point that Toothless turned himself around and dove into the fire of the Red Death's death to wrap himself around Hiccup and take a majority of the damage. They seem to copy each other's movements, sometimes moving in sync and other times sharing looks that only they know the meaning behind.

Oh for Thor's sake, they said this would be easy...

[There's a curious green eye studying the communicator before it zooms out to reveal a young boy of about fourteen or fifteen, his face covered in scratches and scars that look both fresh and old, the oldest one a nick on the right side of his chin. He grins a bit tiredly, sitting back and snapping his fingers.]

I knew I could get it to work! Man, if we had things like this back home it'd make communicating with other tribes easier...

[He fiddles a bit, the screen flicking off as he discovers the other functions, a bit of text gibber jabber appearing before it switches back to full video, then he remembers the people he spoke to said that others could be watching.]

Uh, hi. I'm Hiccup. Great name, I know, but I guess it's kept me from being snatched up by gnomes and trolls all these years so it's worth something at least. If you couldn't guess, I'm kinda new...just arrived really. I don't think I was awake for a lot of the talk though. I think I'm awake. At least I hope so anyway. This place doesn't look like any Valhalla I ever dreamed of.

Log Sample;
There was nothing Hiccup liked better than flying, if he was being honest with himself. Ever since that first exhilarating flight with Toothless what seems like forever ago now, it had become as natural as walking. If feeling like he was meant to ride dragons was anything to go by, he was a little disappointed that it had taken so long to come into his life. Absentmindedly he rubbed the back of Toothless's neck, feeling the dull thrum of a rumble underneath him.

"Let's see what you got today, bud."

A growl of approval left Toothless and his wings flared out at his sides, Hiccup gripping the saddle underneath him with white knuckled fervor as adrenaline pumped through his veins. Wind rushed by him, whipping through his hair and stinging his cheeks. Winter was on the way, the cold air from their flight making goosebumps ripple over the skin of his neck. Toothless spun in mid air before he shot straight up, arching into a dive.

Hiccup was appreciative of the rush to the head this flight was giving him - it let him forget everything that had happened over the course of Bork week. Finding hope that there was other Night Furies out there, only to be let down hard when it turned out to be a trap crafted by Mildew and Alvin, and then escaping only to have Mildew fall to his death...it sat heavily on Hiccup's mind.

Hiccup shook his head as Toothless pulled back just before they hit the water, skimming along the surface. Mist was starting to roll in, covering the expanse of the sea surrounding Berk and the young viking shielded his face with a hand, hearing a confused growl from his dragon.

"Keep going, Toothless. We'll turn around once we find a way out of this sea mist." A concerned noise was the only thing that caught Hiccup's ears as he felt their altitude lower, eyelids drooping.

He wasn't awake when they hit the ground.
